Updates & Acquisitions
September 3, 2026
My desire to write updates tends to waver, particularly waiting until I've done something else of note to remind myself that I can, in fact, write things. This month's burst of morale comes from finally getting around to fixing the site layout to not completely break for mobile users, by relocating the navigation bar to the top of the page (and thanks again go to mavica for helping me through all of that nonsense).

| A spread of things I'd been holding off about for quite a while. |
Most of this update comes in the form of things that I've kept seeing at the local game shop and only decided to finally buy because I couldn't think of anything else to do with my store credit. And, truth be told, I amassed a pretty large amount of that. I've been taking a good, hard look at the state of my video game library, and realizing that, You Know What? I don't need all of these. I barely play most of them. A lot of the games I own are just random junk I found and only kept because it filled the shelf. Plenty of the games are things that I realized over time that I just did not care about (like the PS2 Shin Megami Tensei games). Better that they go to homes where they'd be appreciated.
So, over time, a lot of things got taken down to the local. I'd banked a couple hundred bucks worth of credit in the hope that maybe they'd have a console I wanted at some point, but I guess people just aren't trading those in lately. So, I did what any reasonable Golfshriner would do (which is to say, I did what I would do, because I am the only one of those) and finally splurged my credit on a bunch of the slightly more expensive golf games that I'd have otherwise skipped. Just not the really expensive stuff; I may have a hole burning in my wallet, but I'm still not going to pay $90 USD for a physical of Golf Story.
So, upon converting a significant portion of my normal game library into golf games, this update comes with the following new additions to the Shrine:
- Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour for GameCube. I am told this is one of the better entries in the series, and I don't doubt that. But I primarily know it because this is the game where you get to hear Toad audibly talk about golf terms.
- Mario Golf: World Tour for 3DS. I would have never paid money for this if not for my store credit; they wanted almost $50 for it, which is well beyond Golfshrine's impulse-buy threshold.
- Mario Golf for Game Boy Color. I have been told quite a lot that this is the best golf you can get on the Game Boy Color. I mean, Camelot gets to flex their previous history as an RPG developer into what amounts to a story mode. It's also unusually pretty for a Game Boy Color game.
- Jack Nicklaus Power Challenge Golf for Sega Genesis. Finally adding an Accolade cartridge to the shelf. I would have loved to have the box for this one, with its extremely dramatic box art, but it's at least also on the cartridge, so I'm not disappointed.
- CyberTiger for Game Boy Color. I'm only missing the Nintendo 64 version of it, now, to complete the unholy triumvirate of big-headed Tiger Woods games.
- Fred Couples Golf for Sega Game Gear. While not Golfshrine's first Game Gear game, it does finally complete the Fred Couples duology, meaning it can now hang out with the companion 32X game, GOLF Magazine Presents: 36 Great Holes Starring Fred Couples - the game whose full name I am morally obligated to type out in full every time it comes up.
- And finally: GOLF 3D (The EGA Invitational) from The InMar Group and CrystalVision Software, for MS-DOS computers. Why's this one worth saving for last? In case you missed the article update from last month, this was a previously unpreserved shareware golf game from the makers of the Buick Dimensions catalogs and golf sims, and a missing link between the two major incarnations of car company golf sims. And because it's shareware, I have no qualms about sharing the hell out of it.
Had I not waited until Today to write up this update, that would have been everything. Dad, however, was poking through his garage cabinets again, an apparent treasure trove of software from times long past. Today, he unearthed several CD-spindles (yes, spindles, from emptied out containers of blank CD-Rs) filled with all the CDs we no longer wanted to have. His intent was to turn the lot into wall-art. About 95% of the CDs were America On-Line trial discs, of the type we used to receive in the mail every other week, or EarthLink, or CompuServe, or MSN, or AT&T WorldNet, or Total Entertainment Network, or... (cough). A lot of spam, frankly. But I'm glad I dug through the lot anyway, because that remaining 5% included the likes of...

| THIS guy! |
- Two copies of Accolade All-Star Sports Collection - a compilation put together for Diamond Multimedia and bundled with CD-ROM drives, in 1994. It contains HardBall III, Unnecessary Roughness, and Jack Nicklaus Golf & Course Design: Signature Edition, the latter of which Golfshrine already has. But hey, now we have it thrice.
- A copy of Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat for Windows 95, Mindscape's 3D real-time strategy game based on the famous Games Workshop tabletop setting.
- Chex Quest in its similarly America On-Line-sponsored form. I have a copy of it, but I don't care, I'm keeping that.
- Assault Rigs for Windows 95, Psygnosis' 3D tank-em-up; this one unfortunately requires an ATI 3D Rage card to play, which I do not own.
- And one other tiny little thing...

The little guy is, I'm going to say, Golfshrine's first Mini CD-ROM; it is a promotional disc for the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Oregon. We probably either received it in the mail, or got it from someone else we knew who had, but had no particular use for it. It's copyright-dated 2001, and is mostly just a Made-in-Macromedia brochure for the club and its amenities. But, hey, it's Golf Related Things, so it's going on the shelf somewhere.
Item(s) of particular note this time
- Nintendo Classics for Nintendo Switch Online announces the addition of more Virtual Boy games, including T&E Soft's GOLF, a game on their New 3D Golf Simulation engine on what I believe is their last original course, Papillon Country Club. Golfshrine already has the physical of this game, but maybe somebody else wants to play it sometime. Put this on loop some time and become immersed in the GOLF. GOLF. GOLF. GOLF.
